'Security moms' still on board, Republicans say
It wasn't just the "Clintonville, Ohio" dateline on a Washington Post story headlined "Republicans Losing Security Moms" that had GOP officials seeing red. It was also the idea, contained in the story, that the security moms were bolting to the opposite party. GOP party and congressional Republican officials say their polling does not suggest that the GOP is losing to Democrats the women and mothers who are worried about the nation's security.
"That's crap," said a House leadership official. "We are not losing security moms."
While polling does show a drop in support for Republicans among security moms, the official said that it doesn't mean automatically that the women will vote Democratic.
"They're just upset with Iraq," said another official. "But they're not going to go with the Democrats as a result."
It was just the latest criticism of the Post in Republican circles for a series of front-page stories over the past few months suggesting that the GOP is going to get crushed in the midterm elections.
"It's like they have a designated spot above the fold for the 'Republicans suck' story of the day," said a Republican strategist.
