Nuclear energy moves front and center

Political analysts trying to foresee the next big issue believe that nuclear power could become a 2008 powerhouse if oil and gas prices continue to surge and Americans grow more concerned about the impact of global warming and greenhouse gases.

"Nuclear power is a new issue," says GOP pollster Frank Luntz. A Democratic strategist said nuclear power could even become a darling of the party after years of opposition. Luntz said that it polls well. He said that about 60 percent or more of Americans support nuclear power, and he predicted that support could jump into the 70s in the coming election years. He and others said the issue has regained traction among Americans as fuel prices have risen and more people have become convinced that global warming is a reality.

The absence of any major accident in nearly 30 years and the administration's new focus on promoting nuclear power are also making it politically attractive and more profitable for energy producers.

"This could become the mainstream energy issue fast," says a GOP political adviser.
