Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told groups backing the nomination of Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court that he plans to bring the confirmation vote to the Senate on or by January 20.

"The battle is going to heat up," he said last week in a conference call meant to urge the groups to continue fighting for the Bush conservative. "Stay right on track, keep doing what you're doing." Frist assailed Democratic attacks on Alito's ethics and finances.

"Over the last few weeks, Judge Alito has not been treated fairly," he said. Frist described the Democratic assault as the "spaghetti strategy by which the extreme left throws everything against the wall to see what sticks." Frist said that Alito had met with nearly 70 senators so far and had been "impressive" and forthcoming, turning over tens of thousands of pages of documents.

"He should receive 100 votes for confirmation," he joked.
