White House Watch: Insiders talking up Rice's ’08 chances

Uninspired so far by the leading 2008 GOP presidential crop, administration officials are suggesting anew that Secretary of State Condi Rice would make a good opponent for likely Democratic candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"That would be a classic matchup," said one top administration official. "It's like Bush versus Clinton."

Rice has dismissed such speculation, but Bush officials haven't taken her message to heart, and now even some close to Rice are talking about a Clinton-Rice matchup in 2008. One problem Rice faces, say associates, is that she can't run while acting as the nation's top diplomat, and there are no expectations that she will quit the post.

That has led some of her allies to suggest that she would make an ideal vice presidential nominee, leaving the job in mid-2008 instead of 2007 to run in the primaries.
