White House Watch: Bush swagger could crimp domestic agenda

Republican strategists are concerned that, as President Bush urges Americans to stay the course in Iraq, he may come across as too belligerent and harsh, causing more problems for his domestic agenda.
"In recent weeks, he has seemed cocky, and his swagger is back, and that transfers to other things," a prominent GOP insider told U.S. News. "He needs a softer image."

If Bush seems too macho and his credibility continues to erode, Americans upset with recent setbacks in Iraq, especially moderate female voters, could turn against his domestic agenda. Some of his allies say he needs to return to an emphasis on "compassionate conservative" issues, such as education and encouraging faith-based groups to do charitable work.
