White House Watch: Social Security election lines

Senior Republican strategists say the debate over Social Security has already taken shape for the midterm congressional elections in November 2006: The Democrats will say Bush and the GOP want to destroy the retirement system by privatizing it.

Meanwhile, the Republicans will accuse the Democrats of being obstructionists without any fresh ideas of their own. Both sides say they can get the best of those arguments—and few expect the nature of the debate to change regardless of how Social Security legislation turns out.
