The war over warming

In reading “Turning Up the Heat” [April 10] and researching global warming, I find it amusing that one of the most important facts is almost never mentioned: 93 to 97 percent of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is caused by nature (the majority by diffusion from the oceans), not by man. From a geologic perspective, carbon dioxide levels are lower now than any time since the Carboniferous Age some 300 million years ago. Yet the earth has gone through many ice age advances and retreats through its history regardless of carbon dioxide levels. Indeed, one could conclude that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels only play a marginal versus pivotal role in the global warming debate.
