On to the polls

We are the only democracy in the world where each person's vote does not count equally. Under the Electoral College system, a person's vote cast in Wyoming counts nearly four times as much as a vote cast in California. Furthermore, in most states, a presidential candidate may win thousands, or even millions more votes than their opponent, yet, that counts no more than if the candidate won by a single vote. The rest of the majority's votes are ignored, as are all of the minority's votes. Each person's vote should count, and count equally. The Electoral College may have served a purpose two centuries ago, when most people were tied to agriculture and lived their entire lives in the state where they were born. 217 years ago, the Electoral College was devised as a compromise to convince 13 independent former colonies to join together into a federated nation. Now, we are a mobile society, united by telecommunication and shared history. We don't need to elect our national leader as states. We should elect our President as people.
