On to the polls

John Kerry charges that President George W. Bush is planning to "privatize" the Social Security system. If only it were so! President Bush has stated a desire to enable American workers to invest a small fraction of their Social Security taxes so as to provide for their future: to have ownership of a portion of their payroll deductions with the opportunity to build a large nest-egg which will reduce their dependency on government. Senator Kerry's answer to what has been commonly acknowledged as a looming Social Security crisis is that we do nothing, at least for today, putting off tough decisions to some other president's watch. Sen. Kerry knows full well that the current system provides an unsustainable level of benefits, and that as increasing numbers of Americans retire, the current balance of revenues versus disbursements will crumble and one or more of the following will occur: benefits will be reduced, taxes will be increased, and/or the age at which one qualifies for Social Security benefits will be increased. All of these potential solutions are painful. The answer that causes the smallest degree of pain is the Bush investment option.
