On to the polls

My grandparents support the war in Iraq. My grandmother asked me: "What do we have if we don't have our freedom?" That's a good point. I'm backed into a corner. How do I counter with some kind of freedom-crushing retort? Or is it possible that I can support freedom and not the war in Iraq? I support our troops and yes, I enjoy freedom. Fortunately, I can only imagine the situation abroad for our soldiers. Anyone who has fought for our country will always have my respect. But there is more than patriotism at stake in this upcoming election. I'd like to ask my grandmother: what do we have if we don't have affordable health care, a strong economy, or a well-funded public education system? My grandparents and I don't have a relative in Iraq or Afghanistan. But I can imagine that we did. Or I could try to imagine what it would be like to have friend, husband or father killed in a war that had no clear purpose. This is already a reality for too many families in America. When you vote on November 2, imagine that this is your reality. What do we have if someone we love is fighting for a mistake?
