On to the polls

I am the mother of a U.S. soldier. Every morning I get up and turn on the news of Iraq. Then I make a cup of strong coffee. I hear about the strikes on the terrorist cells that are reportedly centered in Fallujah. I open my e-mail and hope that there will be a brief message. My son doesn't have much to say these days. Once every other week or so I get a phone call. The voice on the other end doesn't sound so familiar. It is thin and flat and I can't hear any of the playful, rebellious, melodic spirit that used to characterize my son. The daily news tells of how many troops were killed and sometimes how many Iraqis. I am struck with the disparity of the news reporting I remembered of Vietnam and that of the reports of the war of now. I think of families in previous wars that waited months to hear from loved ones. I am thankful for email, but still it is not enough. I remember feeling for the mothers of the sons of Vietnam. I could not imagine what it would be to send a son into an unjust war. I vowed that if I had children, they would never see those horrors.
