Mission
School mission Ensuring access so that all qualified students can attend the University of Tennessee and helping students reach their full potential is core to UT's strategic mission. Exposing students to experiences and educational opportunities that best prepare them for working in a global marketplace is a primary focus. UT welcomed in fall 2007 the most academically qualified freshman class ever, with one-third of the students having core GPAs of 4.0. Average ACT scores (at 26 in fall 2007) continue to rise since the new Tennessee Hope lottery-funded scholarship began in 2004. The Tennessee Pledge Scholarship program covers tuition, fees, and room and board for eligible low-income students. In fall 2007, the Tennessee Promise Scholarship program began providing scholarships to students from select state high schools that traditionally have not sent many students to UT. About 99 percent of all in-state applicants qualify for the lottery-funded Hope Scholarship, which provides $3,800 per year. The Knoxville campus has now added $1 million to support its new Tennessee Pledge and Promise scholarship programs. Fifteen of the nation's top students will enter UT next year as the inaugural class of Hassam scholars, an honors program that includes a study-abroad opportunity and up to $5,500 for senior research thesis purposes. Additionally, three UT undergraduates have received the highly coveted Goldwater Scholarship for fall 2008. The university has now created an Office of External Scholarships to help students apply for and win prestigious post-graduate scholarships such as the Rhodes and Fulbright. UT's long-range program "Ready for the World" continues to help students gain the international and intercultural knowledge they need to succeed in today's world. The effort has enriched campus multicultural programming and has provided new scholarships and study-abroad opportunities. Graduate and undergraduate education are both enhanced by UT's partnership with Battelle to manage nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. That relationship helps UT recruit top scientists and offer first-rate internships and research opportunities. UT has launched many new initiatives to improve its retention rate, chiefly by simplifying the way students seek academic help and guidance. The Student Success Center, which opened in 2005, provides information and resources in academic advising, tutoring and academic support, service and community and student life. To further improve retention, UT has programs designed to acquaint incoming freshmen with the campus, the faculty, and academic life. Among those are "Life of the Mind," in which all freshmen read the same book before arriving on campus and then participate in discussion groups; college open houses; "how to succeed in" seminars focusing on courses with the highest enrollments and lowest pass rates; and freshmen seminars, a banquet of small classes meant to off-set larger lectures. These efforts are paying off: The retention rate for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's first-time, full-time freshmen who began classes in fall 2006 is 84 percent -- an improvement over the past rate of 81.7 percent. To better serve its students, UT's library created The Commons; a 24-hour area that brings together frequently used library and technology resources. Since then, visitation has increased by almost 50 percent and library materials circulation an astounding 79 percent. UT Knoxville has 11 colleges, taught by more than 1,400 faculty members and with more than 300 degree programs. UT's connections to its neighbors provide tremendous opportunities to students and the community. Along with ORNL, UT is adjacent to Knoxville's redeveloped downtown area, which offers theater, cinema and concerts as well as a thriving residential condominium community. The nation's most visited national park, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is also a short drive away.
