| School mission | The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) measures the performance of colleges using five benchmarks to define "student engagement." They were (1) the level of academic challenge; (2) active and collaborative learning; (3) student-faculty interaction; (4) enriching educational experiences; and (5) a supportive campus environment. Responses by Wofford students to the survey questions were so positive that the college was selected for Project DEEP, a detailed study by Indiana University to determine how effective institutions deploy resources and organize their curriculum, student activities and support services to achieve individual student success, as measured by persistence, satisfaction, learning and graduation. The report concluded, in part: "By all accounts, Wofford College is an engaging institution that benefits from an enviable level of loyalty and collegiality among students, faculty, administrators, and all college employees. In part, this is due to a storied tradition, open communication, leadership continuity, and the college's small size. Moreover, Wofford has a clearly espoused and enacted mission. Its singular focus on the liberal arts experience is distinctive; It is a place that succeeds because it knows it should. Few rules and regulations govern the college. Rather, it works as well as it does because people trust each other and want to do better tomorrow than they did today. The spirit of collaboration evidenced in administrative matters, among students working on group projects and engaging in group study in and outside of class, and via community events, provides rich conditions for active and collaborative learning." |
