One of Virginia's largest universities with nearly 30, 000 students, George Mason University offers enterprising faculty and an inventive curriculum, with a spirit of innovation and excellence that attracts the best minds in the world. Drawing prominent scholars from all fields, Mason's outstanding faculty includes two Nobel laureates in economic sciences, Pulitzer Prize winners, IEEE Centennial Medalist, and recipients of numerous Fulbright, Templeton, National Science Foundation, and National Endowment of Arts grants and awards, among others. At its three campus locations in Northern Virginia, Mason students enjoy a vibrant campus life and all the excitement and the resources that its proximity to a world capital, Washington, D. C. , can offer, including extraordinary internship and employment opportunities. Many of its successful alumni remain in the area pursuing careers in the array of Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, think tanks, and health care systems found throughout the region. A large international student population has helped it become one of the most diverse campuses in the United States. Mason boasts a first-tier law school ranked 34th in the nation, with its intellectual property program coming in at 24, and the largest policy Ph. D. program in the country. A learning community for undergraduate students, the New Century College, integrates interdisciplinary knowledge with workplace and lifelong learning skills. Its Writing Across the Curriculum program is nationally ranked as are it graduate programs in computer science, history, education, public administration, and industrial/organizational psychology. From tsunami, earthquake, and hurricane analysis that uses advanced computational sciences to Alzheimer's disease and cancer research in the emerging field of proteomics, Mason is at the center of scientific research that is changing the world. And Mason is one of the only places on the globe where undergraduates can participate in science as it is conducted in the finest graduate schools and research institutions: across disciplines and having real-world application. Established in 1972, Mason is a relatively young university. Not bound by tradition and old ways of thinking, the university and its faculty embrace technology and new approaches to learning-and Mason likes being first. It was the first university in the country to offer doctoral programs in conflict resolution, cultural studies, and information technology. Mason was also the first to start an engineering school that focused on information technology rather than the traditional engineering sciences. Its degree programs in biology-related field such as biosciences and bioinformatics are changing as rapidly as the field itself.
