Mission
School mission With a commitment to life-enhancing research, teaching excellence and service to the community, The University of Texas at Arlington is an educational leader in the heart of North Texas, the fourth-largest metroplex in the country. UT Arlington embraces an active-learning environment that asks students to become hands-on partners in their education, empowered by the University's 1,320 faculty, many of whom are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. The University's 25,000 students pursue more than 180 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in an extensive range of disciplines at both the Arlington campus and the UT Arlington Fort Worth Center. True to its "Be a Maverick" mantra, UT Arlington attracts bright minds and independent thinkers who achieve distinction in the community, the classroom, and the research laboratory. In fact, since 2001, research expenditures at the University have doubled. Similarly, as research grants and contracts dramatically increase, so have the number of invention disclosures, patent applications and licensing agreements. This means real-world research - both at the undergraduate and graduate levels - that addresses real-world needs. For instance, Biochemistry researchers are exploring ways to reduce the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments on cancer patients. Engineers in the Nanotechnology Research and Teaching Facility are manipulating individual atoms and molecules that could herald the next electronics revolution. Psychology professors are studying areas of the brain that, through proper drug management techniques, decrease the perception of pain. Professors in the College of Education are studying the effects of exercise and weight loss on sleep quality and quantity. Outstanding faculty and bright students provide the foundation for such breakthroughs. State-of-the-art facilities provide the environment for their success. As an example, the School of Nursing's new Smart Hospital features more than 30 full-body patient simulators and is one of only six sites nationwide recognized as a Center of Excellence in Simulation by Laerdal Medical. Additionally, UT Arlington's innovative research initiatives will be further enhanced by the construction of an engineering research complex, which will be the largest building on campus and include a component for science research. Construction has begun this year. It's no wonder that in the 2007-08 academic year alone, UT Arlington boasted a $1.3 billion dollar economic impact on the region. In addition to cutting-edge research and engaging learning environments throughout all disciplines, students have countless opportunities to be involved in campus organizations, athletics and special events, wellness programs in the new, world-class Maverick Activities Center, burgeoning apartment and residential life communities, and community service. For that commitment to the community, UT Arlington was named to the 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its innovative service-learning programs. Additionally in 2007-08, the School of Architecture participated in CITYbuild, a 14-school consortium aimed at rebuilding New Orleans' infrastructure and culture, and the School of Social work contributed over 150,000 volunteer service hours. Also recognized as an outstanding educational value, the University was named by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities as one of the best universities in the nation for Hispanic students, and the Dallas Business Journal named the College of Business Administration's graduate programs the best value in North Texas.
