| Mission | |
| School mission | As a comprehensive institution of higher education, Angelo State University touches tomorrow in the lives of students; in the growth of their communities, whether local or global; and in the pursuit of the common good of society. Angelo State offers strong academic programs that provide learning opportunities beyond those found at larger institutions. The low student-faculty ratio (19-1) allows for a personalized educational experience and ASU's undergraduate programs often incorporate into the curriculum the type of research projects typically found only in graduate schools. As a result, ASU graduates have a high acceptance rate in graduate and professional schools, such as law and medicine. For example, ASU has a student acceptance rate of 55 percent for medical school, compared to the statewide average of 35 percent. In the end, ASU turns out graduates who can think critically, adapt to a changing world and succeed in various environments, whether in technology, business, the arts, the sciences or graduate/professional school. Students desiring a more rigorous academic experience can apply to ASU's dynamic Honors Program while those desiring study abroad can participate in a growing International Studies Program that provides a more global experience while keeping costs within reach. ASU boasts the only Physics Department in Texas ranked in the top 20 among undergraduate programs nationwide and a nationally recognized Biology Department which in 2007 became the first department in the nation to have its biology honor society named the top chapter in the nation a record five times. ASU's accounting graduates regularly produce the highest pass rate in Texas on the CPA exam. Academically, the university is organized with five colleges - Business; Education; Liberal and Fine Arts; Sciences; and Graduate Studies - as well as 21 academic departments. Those departments offer 39 undergraduate programs, 23 graduate programs and one associate degree as well as nearly 100 majors. Additionally, ASU provides options for a variety of pre-professional and two-plus-two programs. As the newest member of the Texas Tech University System, ASU is working with Texas Tech to broaden its academic, international and graduate opportunities for all students. ASU draws students from practically every county in Texas (212 of 254) as well as from 38 states and 24 countries, giving Angelo State a legitimate claim as a university of national and even international scope. With more than half of its graduates as first generation college students, ASU is attuned to the academic and social needs of a new generation of college students. In addition to strong academic offerings, ASU provides an ultramodern, 268-acre campus that provides an attractive and safe setting for a college education. ASU's campus facilities are valued at over $345 million and include the Math-Computer Science Building, which houses one of the most sophisticated computer systems in the state; the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, one of the top facilities in all of NCAA Division II athletics; and the Houston-Harte University Center; the center of campus student life. Additionally, the university operates 6,000 additional acres in farm and ranch lands that also serve as home for ASU's Management, Instruction and Research Center as well as the Food Safety and Product Development Laboratory. Angelo State also manages one of the nation's largest scholarship endowments. Funded by the Robert G. and Nona K. Carr Scholarship Foundation, Carr Scholarships today benefit one in every six ASU students with grants ranging from $2,000 to $6,000. Established in 1978 exclusively to benefit needy and deserving ASU students, the Carr Foundation today holds assets of more than $73 million. For the 2007-08 academic year, more than $3.4 million in Carr Scholarships were awarded to ASU students. |
