School mission Northeastern State University aspires to be the premiere regional university in Oklahoma. NSU has a long history of education dating back to 1846, with the establishment of a National Male and National Female Seminary for public education for the Cherokees. NSU now has approximately 9,300 students. Located in the heart of the Cherokee Nation at Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the university also has branch campuses in Broken Arrow and Muskogee.
