Mission
School mission The University of Missouri-Columbia was founded in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi River. Today with more than 28,000 students, 12,000 full-time employees and 244,000 alumni worldwide, Missouri's flagship university offers more than 270 degrees programs through 19 colleges and schools. Although many states fund both a research university and a land-grant university, Missouri combines those roles on MU's 1,448-acre campus. The state's only public member of the Association of American Universities, MU is a major economic engine for Missouri and is one of six public universities nationwide with medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, agriculture and law all on one campus.
