| Mission | |
| School mission | Merrimack College is a four-year, independent college grounded in the liberal arts and guided by the teachings of St. Augustine. Home to the Girard School of Business and International Commerce, the college is one of the few Catholic liberal arts colleges to offer programs in both science and engineering. Merrimack's contemporary academic approach of fusing liberal arts with professional education means students become engaged and ready to make critical, moral and informed decisions of thought, communication and action in their own lives and in service to others. Each year the faculty, trustees, and students participate in Pellegrinago Italia, a pilgrimage in Italy that follows the path of St. Augustine. Participants prepare by reading the writing of St. Augustine's in study groups for months prior to the trip. The college has a 600 seat performing arts center, observatory, and two art galleries, one specifically for student work. Located in a suburban setting just 25 miles north of Boston, Merrimack offers a strong co-operative education program for all majors, undergraduate research opportunities and extensive service learning experiences that promote social responsibility. Merrimack's 2,000 students represent 26 states and 14 countries; nearly 80% live on campus. In the area of curriculum development we have been engaged in a full-on review of the entire curriculum and open to conversation by the entire community through open forums. The most recent curriculum changes will be implemented this fall semester and they include moving from five-course/three-credits per course to a four-course/four-credit (4X4) student curriculum. General education, institutional requirements and each department have reconstituted their courses to engage students in a more meaningful curriculum. In addition, new programs for the Fall 2008 semester include an Honors Program, Criminology, Engineering Management, and Sports Management. Our business program is also adding a finance concentration. |
