| Mission | |
| School mission | The University of Louisville is Kentucky's metropolitan research institution, serving the specific educational, intellectual, cultural, service and research needs of the Louisville Metro region. UofL students get all the benefits of a thriving institution on an attractive, comfortable campus in the heart of Kentucky's largest city. The university has a special obligation to serve the needs of a diverse population, including many ethnic minorities and place-bound, part-time, nontraditional students. More than 170 fields of study are offered through 11 schools and colleges, where students gain an in-depth classroom education paired with relevant, hands-on experience in the community. The university has nationally ranked schools and programs in education and business and outstanding schools such as nursing; dentistry; public health and information sciences; social work; law; and graduate studies. Its School of Music is renowned for jazz studies and for excellent choral performances. The Cardinal Singers were ranked second among more than 3,500 choral groups worldwide in 2007. UofL also is home to an outstanding theater arts department and to the first (and only) graduate program in African American theater in the region, its library is ranked among the top 100 research libraries in North America and the university boasts one of the nations top clean rooms, in which engineering students work in high-tech areas such as bioengineering and nanotechnology. UofL is also among the fastest-growing research institutions in the nation. Its medical school faculty have garnered international attention for, among other things, conducting the worlds first successful implantation of a fully implantable artificial heart, completing the nation's first successful hand transplant and developing the worlds first effective vaccine against cervical cancer (Gardacil). Another factor that makes UofL stand out is its community engagement. In one year alone, more than $25.1 million was contributed to charitable organizations throughout Kentucky's communities through volunteerism and direct donations provided by UofL students, faculty and staff. The university also is involved in thousands of public outreach programs including the Signature Partnership, in which UofL has adopted a historically underserved area of Louisville and is partnering with community organizations and businesses to improve the social, cultural, educational, health care and economic development services there. UofL is also is a major player in the city arts scene. Research suggests that markets with fine arts and other quality of life amenities attract a creative class that, in turn, becomes a principal driver of economic opportunity. The university's participation in downtown development is bringing fine arts programming to Louisville, helping to create a more vibrant city center. The program, the largest in Kentucky, emphasizes a variety of media, including glass. At the recently opened Cressman Center for the Visual Arts in downtown Louisville, passersby can watch students hone their craft as they create fine works of glass that are then displayed in the attached gallery space. Our students graduate to become valuable, productive citizens. Just a few of UofL's noted alumni are current Republican Leader and U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell; U.S. senator and recent president candidate Christopher Dodd; former NPR host Bob Edwards; best-selling author Sue Grafton; and Sharon Darling, founder and president of the National Center for Family Literacy. Our alumni also contribute greatly to their communities' economies. In Kentucky alone, more than 3,000 UofL alumni own businesses and these businesses employ more than 75,000 people. UofL's legacy of excellence stretches back more than 200 years. Throughout this time, the university has continued to make vital contributions to Kentucky's success and to provide a valuable place of study for future leaders. |
