| School mission | Founded in 1910, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is the nation's first state-supported liberal arts institution for African-Americans in the nation offering bachelor's degrees in more than 100 disciplines and master's degrees in more than 40 areas. With a student body of more than 8,300, NCCU prepares students academically and professionally to become leaders prepared to advance in a diverse, global society. NCCU has a state-of-the-art biotechnology research center and is in the process of constructing a new $17 million Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE) Center for Excellence that will train students to help North Carolina meet its work force needs in biotechnology. In 2005, NCCU was No. 1 among historically black colleges and universities in North Carolina in the recruitment of National Achievement Scholars and a leader among all institutions in the state trailing Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. |
