| Mission | |
| School mission | Multidisciplinary studies have been a distinctive feature of academic life at Vassar for more than three decades, fostering an intellectual environment that thrives on crossing disciplinary boundaries and challenging prevailing models of inquiry. The free exchange of ideas across disciplines stimulates the development of new courses, programs, and resources. The most recent addition to the curriculum is the Media Studies Program. Faculty members from across the disciplines teach in this program, which engages students in the critical evaluation of new and old media technologies, including all forms of representational media (oral/aural, written, visual), mass media (print, television, radio, film), new media (digital multimedia, the Internet, networked media), and the technologies and cultural institutions associated with them. As in other multidisciplinary offerings at Vassar, the program incorporates perspectives derived from the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences to investigate how media shape our understanding of reality. |
