Mission
School mission A liberal arts college with a pre-professional focus, the SUNY College at Oneonta features outstanding and accessible faculty, students committed to academic achievement and community service, excellent facilities and technology, a beautiful campus, and a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Popular academic majors include the nationally accredited education, music industry, dietetics, human ecology, and chemistry programs; traditional majors in the arts, sciences, social sciences, and business; and programs in emerging fields such as computer art, environmental science, and mass communications. The College rates highly among public colleges nationwide in value, selectivity, service, and alumni support. Oneonta offers a friendly, small college atmosphere with a genuine sense of community, enhanced by a campuswide commitment to providing the best possible experience for students. The College is small enough to provide personal attention, yet large enough to offer impressive facilities, equipment, and programs. Faculty and students collaborate on projects through Oneonta's Student/Faculty Grant Program for Research and Creative Activities. Internships, service learning, and experiential learning afford students opportunities to learn by doing. Oneonta offers nearly 900 scholarships, including Oneonta Presidential Scholarships for high-achieving students. Student activities include student government, athletics, and over 70 organizations focusing on academics, publications, performance, cultural awareness, and special interests. Leadership and honors programs provide further opportunities for students to develop life-long skills. Unique facilities include a Music Recording Studio with tunable walls; the Computer Art Lab; a DNA Computing and Genomics Lab; the Alumni Field House; and a new residence hall with apartment-style living. The College has invested over $75 million in campus facilities since 2000, including recent $12-million renovations of the Human Ecology and Science buildings. In nearby Cooperstown, Oneonta offers the Biological Field Station and Cooperstown Graduate Program in History Museum Studies. Specialized endowments support a number of facilities, and Oneonta leads SUNY in the percentage of alumni who make gifts to their alma mater. Twice named to the Templeton Foundation Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges and named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in 2007 and 2008, Oneonta features the nationally known student-run Center for Social Responsibility and Community, which coordinates service learning and volunteerism. The highly rated Milne Library provides an expansive print collection and extensive electronic resources. Oneonta offers computer labs in all academic and residential buildings, campuswide wireless networking, and the most bandwidth to the Internet of any SUNY college. Located in the historic Susquehanna Valley of central New York, Oneonta is convenient to all of New York State. The town is home to the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. With a population of around 14,000 the city of Oneonta maintains a small-town feel but offers opportunities for entertainment, the arts, athletics, and shopping. The region is also rich in outdoor recreational and environmental opportunities.
