A Milwaukee resident, Karlton is on his way to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to become an architect. His short commute belies the work behind his feat: staying focused on college at a high school that prizes sports over academics and where a third of the seniors don't graduate. After a cousin made a connection for him with a faculty member at UW-Milwaukee, Karlton was asked to design a house and attended a summer architecture program on scholarship before his senior year.

ACT score: 24 composite

GPA: 3.7 nonweighted

Extracurrics: Working at a grocery store, Milwaukee Urban League, track and cross country, yearbook, National Honor Society

Essay topic: His life's plan

Initial strategy: Applied to a lot of name schools including Cornell and Harvard in addition to in-state schools.

Actual strategy: School reputation and cost narrowed the choices to UW-Milwaukee and UW-Madison.

Coping strategy: Staying at his grandmother's house in the suburbs during the school week

Most stressful part: Working while going to school, applying to college, and doing extracurrics

Stress reliever: Lifting weights

Surprise: Scholarships will nearly cover his entire needs.
