Schools with the same numbered rank are tied. In some cases, health-services administration is offered through the business school. USN&WR--Basic data: Reputation surveys by Market Facts Inc.

METHODOLOGY--Here's how U.S. News determined the rankings of graduate programs in the health professions. This winter, questionnaires were sent to deans, top administrators and senior faculty of the accredited schools in each discipline. In pharmacy, only administrators and deans at schools offering the doctor of pharmacy degree were included. In nursing, only administrators and deans at schools offering master's degrees were included. In most cases, questionnaires went to three respondents at each school. When initial questionnaires were not returned, follow-up surveys were sent to nonrespondents. Respondents--who rated only institutions in their own disciplines--were asked to rank the reputations of the accredited schools by placing them into one of four quartiles of academic quality. A school received 4 points for each vote in the highest quartile, 3 for each vote in the second or upper middle quartile, 2 for each vote in the third or lower middle quartile and 1 for each vote in the lowest quartile. "Don't knows" did not count. Respondents were asked to rate each school according to its reputation for scholarship, its curriculum and the quality of faculty and graduate students. U.S. News then totaled the number of points for each school and divided the total by the number of respondents who rated that school. Schools were ranked in descending order based on their average scores. The highest possible score was a 4.0. In some cases, because of ties, the lists of the top 15 schools in each discipline actually contain as many as 17 names.
