The Triumph of Photography
Hope and despair. Shock and tranquillity. Glimpses of hidden worlds and fresh visions of everyday life. Photographs are capable of stopping time and capturing the essence of events across cultures. They can be seductive, encouraging us to
endow them with stories of our ownassumptions that are incomplete at best and wrong at worst. Many of the images that follow are familiar, but the stories behind them may surprise you.
STUART FRANKLIN 1989

yet only a few days later the government would
crack down on pro-democracy demonstrators in
Tiananmen Square.
