Believers of three great faiths consider Jerusalem sacred. As the city celebrates its 3,000y years, archaeologists still probe its holy mysteries

The City of David Year: 1,004 B.C. Population: 4,000 The Shepherd King built his capital on Zion, uniting the 12 tribes of Israel.

When Jesus taught Year: 33 AD Population: Less than 80,000 Rome ruled Jerusalem and Herod was still building his temple when Jesus first visited. Later, he rebuked the money changers there. The crusader period Population: 10,000 Year: circa 1099-1187 The crusader kingdom lasted less than a century but left a monumental mark on Jerusalem.

The 1948 division Population: Jews 100,000; Moslem 40,000; Christian 25,000 After the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, Jerusalem became divided, with Jews in the west and Arabs to the east of the armistice lines.

The city today Population (1994): Jews 406,400; Moslems 145,800; Christians 15,000 Jerusalem was reunited when Israel captured the Old City during the Six Day War of 1967.
