Culture Catch-up: Pitching for relief
DVDs: Before Oprah does her long-awaited episode on her "Crash moment" at the Hermes store in Paris, see the movie that inspired the new vocab. It may still be in a theater near you, but this week you can also get Crash ($29) on DVD. Some complain that the film about a bunch of people of different races interacting in unexpected ways during 24 hours in L.A. gets heavy-handed, but its boundary-pushing exploration of racism and fear is worth watching regardless. The extras aren't muchjust a commentary with director Paul Haggis, star Don Cheadle, and a producer talking about how cheap they were during filming. But it might tide you over until the TV version debuts on FX.
Theater: Puppets are invading Vegasthe foul-mouthed fuzzies from Avenue Q, the Tony Award-winning musical that's shocked the theater world by opening in the Wynn hotel instead of touring. (Those Broadway types are easily traumatized.) It's also delighted audiences by conjuring up a combo of Sesame Street and The Real World, and adding catchy tunes. And Gary Coleman is the landlord. That has to be better than Celine Dion. Vicky Hallett
