Media for Mothers
BOOKS. For novel lovers, Cathy Langer, a buyer for Denver's Tattered Cover bookstores, proposes Sue Miller's poignant Lost in the Forest ($24.95), a tale of love and loss set in California wine country. Older moms will appreciate Fearless Women: Midlife Portraits ($27.50), with black-and-white photos of 50 women, each wielding a mighty sword. Langer suggests giving a mom with young kids a coupon for uninterrupted hours to read.
DVDs. Nell Minow, aka "The Movie Mom" for her Yahoo reviews, says her perfect Mother's Day gift would be a movie to savor on her own, like the classic comedy Divorce, Italian Style with Marcello Mastroianni ($40). Or a favorite childhood film to share with the family--say, National Velvet ($10). Since moms often miss their favorite TV shows, Minow also recommends the Gilmore Girls: The Complete Third Season ($60).
MUSIC. Lydia Vanderloo, pop music editor for barnesandnoble.com, likes Il Divo, the debut album of a male quartet of classically trained singers formed after a talent search by American Idol judge Simon Cowell. The operatic pop CD features an Italian version of "My Way" ($19). If Mom is jazzed, try Curtis Stigers's I Think It's Going to Rain Today ($19), with his swinging take on pop oldies ("Crazy") and even older oldies ("Side by Side"). Plus, there's a subliminal message for Father's Day. The last song on the CD is "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."
