Collector's item
You won't find a sweeter 34 minutes on TV this year than The Collector of Bedford Street (Cinemax, May 14, 7 p.m. ET). The subject of this Oscar-nominated documentary is Larry Selman (below, with filmmaker Alice Elliott and his dog, Happy). The mentally retarded man lives alone in Greenwich Village and fears that his crabby, 81-year-old uncle will no longer be able to watch out for him--until neighbors come to the rescue. Along the way, Selman collects money for charity (hence the title), earns his co-op board's wrath for inviting homeless people to sleep over, and falls in love. -Marc Silver
