Tuesday, November 7 (Election Day):

CHAIN-STORE SALES: The International Council of Shopping Centers releases its weekly snapshot of chain-store sales. Wal-Mart weakness has made the index sag of late.

HIRING ACTIVITY: The Labor Department reports on job openings and hiring in September.

EARNINGS TO WATCH: International Game Technology, Mittal Steel, Tenet Healthcare, and Toyota Motor

Wednesday, November 8:

MORTGAGE APPLICATIONS: The Mortgage Bankers Association of America offers its weekly tally of mortgage applications, rates, and refinancing.

EARNINGS TO WATCH: American Express, Cisco Systems, Federated Department Stores, Sirius Satellite Radio, and Symantec

Thursday, November 9:

JOBLESS CLAIMS: The Labor Department reports on new claims for unemployment benefits.

CONSUMER SENTIMENT: The University of Michigan releases its survey of consumer sentiment, which soared in October as gasoline prices dropped.

EARNINGS TO WATCH: American International Group, J.C. Penney, and Viacom
