LAYOFF REPORT: The outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas will release its tally of announced job cuts in August.

Wednesday, September 6

PRODUCTIVITY: The Commerce Department will update its estimate for second-quarter productivity growth among U.S. workers.

SERVICE INDEX: The Institute for Supply Management will reveal the latest results of its nonmanufacturing index, which gauges the health of the service economy.

BEIGE BOOK: The Federal Reserve Board will release its so-called Beige Book, which offers anecdotal evidence of economic conditions in each of the Fed's 12 districts nationwide.

Thursday, September 7

ASIA-PACIFIC ECONOMIC FORUM: Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson will be in Vietnam to address the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

FED SPEAK: Janet Yellen, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco--and a leading voice at the Fed--will address a lunchtime gathering in Boise, Idaho.

EARNINGS TO WATCH: Korn Ferry, National Semiconductor, and Sharper Image

Friday, September 8

CONSUMER CREDIT: The Federal Reserve will release the latest trends in consumer borrowing.
