Last week, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke indicated the economy may be slowing sufficiently to alleviate inflation fears. This week, Wall Street finds out how quickly this economy is decelerating, as several key earnings reports are due out. And on Friday, the Commerce Department will release a preliminary estimate of second-quarter economic growth.

Monday, July 24:

EARNINGS TO WATCH: American Express, BellSouth, Kraft Foods, Merck, Netflix, Pitney Bowes, Schering-Plough, and Texas Instruments

Tuesday, July 25:

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE: The Conference Board will release the latest results of its closely watched consumer confidence index.

EXISTING-HOME SALES: How quickly this economy cools may have a lot to do with the housing market. This morning, the National Association of Realtors will reveal the latest trends in sales of existing single-family homes.

EARNINGS TO WATCH: 3M, Altria Group, Amazon.com, Ameriprise Financial, AT&T, Countrywide Financial, DuPont, EnCana, JetBlue Airways, McDonald’s, McGraw Hill, Schering, UPS, Weyerhaeuser, Whirlpool, Wrigley, and Xerox

Wednesday, July 26:

EARNINGS TO WATCH: Anheuser-Busch, Black & Decker, Boeing, ConocoPhillips, GlaxoSmithKline, Hess, and WellPoint

Thursday, July 27

NEW-HOME SALES: Today, the Commerce Department reports on new-home sales for June. Since February, the median price of a new home sold has fallen more than $15,000 to around $235,000.

EARNINGS TO WATCH: Aetna, Blockbuster, DaimlerChrysler, Dow Chemical, Exxon Mobil, Harrah's Entertainment, Northrop Grumman, Sony, and US Airways

Friday, July 28

ECONOMIC GROWTH: The Commerce Department will release its preliminary analysis of gross domestic product for the second quarter.

CONSUMER SENTIMENT: Today, the University of Michigan releases its analysis of consumer sentiment.

EARNINGS TO WATCH: Baker Hughes, Chevron, and Office Depot
