The week ahead

May turned out to be a disappointing month for stocks, with the Nasdaq composite index tumbling more than 6 percent and the Dow Jones industrial average losing around 2 percent of its value. This week, Wall Street crosses its fingers in hopes of a better June.

Monday, June 5:

ISM SERVICE INDEX: The Institute for Supply Management will release the latest results of its nonmanufacturing index, which gauges the health of the nation's service economy.

Tuesday, June 6:

ENERGY OUTLOOK: The U.S. Energy Information Administration will update its earlier forecasts for oil and gasoline prices for the remainder of the year.

FED SPEAK: Thomas Hoenig, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, will be in Denver today delivering a speech on the state of the national economy.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK: The Business Roundtable will unveil the latest results of its closely watched CEO Economic Outlook Survey. This survey asks chief executives about their feelings on a host of issues ranging from their own hiring plans to their thoughts on the economy.

FED SPEAK: Jack Guynn, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, will give a speech in Georgia on his outlook for the nation's economy.

Thursday, June 8:

EARNINGS TO WATCH: National Semiconductor and Sharper Image

Friday, June 9:

TRADE BALANCE: With the dollar continuing to weaken against other major currencies, Wall Street will be curious to see if the nation's trade deficit improved in April.

FED SPEAK: Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke will be at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his Ph.D. in economics in 1979, to deliver the school's commencement address.
