U.S. News asked seven top photographers to choose the compact digital camera they like best.

Agency: Polaris Images
Notable award: National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism Award for International News Picture Story
Favorite compact camera: Lumix DMC-FX01

"It's a 6-megapixel camera. I like that the camera turns on immediately, and there is no perceptible shutter delay. It has a very sharp Leica lens, fast multiple shot mode, big viewing screen, small size, solid feel, long battery life, and it accepts 2-gigabyte flash cards, which can hold almost 700 pictures. The cons? It can't shoot RAW, has no viewfinder, and produces too much noise at ISO 400. As a guest, I shot some pictures at a friend's wedding, and one of them became the image the couple used on their thank-you card. Also the other day, I was going home and got caught in the crowds of an immigration rally. I shot some pictures with the Lumix, and they were good enough to send to my photo agency."

Price check: Amazon, $269.99
