Major Sources of Trans Fat for U.S. Adults

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that all Americans limit their intake of fats and oils high in saturated and trans fats as much as possible. Yet the average American adult consumes 5.8 grams of trans fat daily. Where does the trans fat come from?

Cakes, cookies, crackers, pies, and bread  40 percent
Animal products  21 percent
Margarine  17 percent
Fried potatoes  8 percent
Potato chips, corn chips, popcorn  5 percent
Household shortening  4 percent
Salad dressing  3 percent
Breakfast cereal  1 percent
Candy  1 percent
