The College Payoff

Posted 10/24/06

It still pays to go to college.

That's the message of a report today from the College Board, which also found that the price of tuition continues to rise at a rate faster than overall inflation.

Thirty years ago, men with a college degree earned only 19 percent more than peers who stopped their education after graduating from high school. Today, male college graduates earn 63 percent more than male high school graduates. Women with bachelor's degrees today earn 70 percent more than women who have only high school degrees, double the differential of 1975.

In addition, college graduates have an easier time finding jobs. The unemployment rate for college graduates is just 2.3 percent, almost half of the general rate of unemployment, the College Board found.
