Splurge!
Stuff can become more valuable. Or not. So collectors should focus on a field that brings pleasure and has potential to appreciate. David Eldridge of Eldridge Appraisals in Naples, Fla., recommends porcelain Rookwood vases from southern Ohio, especially those decorated by Japanese artist Kataro Shirayamadani. Made from the late 1800s to the 1940s, the vases now sell for thousands through art dealers and at auction. As they grow older (and time takes its inevitable toll), their value should continue to rise.
