Posted 9/3/05
By Richard J. Newman

It's not just how many miles they get per gallon; it's how well they do with a tank of gas based on their footprint. Here are the 73 most frugal–and the most overindulgent–of SUVs. Please note that the four negative figures in the last column represent the amount by which those vehicles exceed the mileage targets.

Click the blue headers to sort the list based on make, model, gas mileage, or percent below target.

Information is based on the most popular trim line for each model, as determined by Kelley Blue Book. Data is for model year 2006 vehicles where available, otherwise for 2005 model year vehicles. Mileage targets for 2008 are determined by NHTSA in its proposed new gas mileage standards for light trucks.
