Do you know if research has shown wether maggot therapy is useful on open tumors?

Asking from a Veteranarian point of view, as I had to deal with a cat that had an open, oozing tumor on her side that had no option for treatment other then topical washes and keeping it clean.

Has it ever been tried on open tumors? If so what were the results?

I too believe that maggot therapy would save thousands of limbs and lives not only in America(where it is underused) but also in other countries, especially third world countries. It is so cheap and better than all the expensive drugs and conventional treatments used on me. (That never worked) The maggots can eat all the dead infected tissue, excrete enzymes to promote healing and kill all the bacteria at one time. They only use the green bottle blow fly here because some flies can eat good tissue, also. But not the green bottle blow fly. I am sure there is a way to set up laboratories(in other countries) to disinfect the eggs to produce medical maggots for use. The only thing holding this back is money and interest in helping to save thousands of peoples limbs and lives. You can check out our web site to learn more information and ask questions. (web site under construction) If you have any ideas lets us know. We too want to help many!!!!

Hey!I read with great interest about the Maggot therapy and being a Nurse by profession, I really would love it to be used in the 3rd world where people live in absolute poverty!

Many people in my native country of Kenya cannot even get to hospital and if they manage to get there, treatment is costly and most of them die unattended to because even in the state owned hospitals, one has to pay for the services.

Unhealing wounds are dressed with all sorts of things and at times people loose limbs to amputation or develop other complications which are at times fatal.

I want to believe that this therapy is what africa and the rest of the 3rd world has been waiting for.

Please I would like to know more about this therapy e.g. the criteria used to choose the patients, length of treatment, if it can be done in the outpatient department etc.

I would love to be a part of search an interesting treatment. Thanks!

Each hospital in the country should have a special small

unit for patients with diabetic foot ulcers to go to

for help on obtaining maggott debridement therapy -- names of

doctors who would consider prescribing maggotts, information on

Medicare coverage and their low cost, information

on how effective they are, and phone nos. of other patients

who are willing to speak to others of their maggott healing

experience for encouragement.

So many limbs can be saved this way. It has to be made known.

Thinking Harder

This blog is the public workshop of U.S. News writer and editor Ben Harder. In articles published in the magazine, he has covered a range of sciences, including medicine, human behavior, prehistory, and evolution. Here, he can explore those and other scientific fields more fully and more informally than is possible in print. He'll share whatever seems noteworthy or potentially useful, and he invites readers to do the same.

WTOP Audio
On Feb. 24, 2008, Ben discussed the link between artificial light and cancer on WTOP radio. Listen to the interview at WTOP News. He again talked about light pollution on WTOP on March 22, exploring its environmental effects.
