Columbus left for the New World knowing the circumference of the earth to within a few hundred nautical miles, and knowing the relative positions of Spain and India. He would have known that a landmass
( Greenland and North America) lay in his path, but would have had no details as to its makeup, so that his landfall, while fortuitous, bespeaks state-of-the-art navigation for the day, and a much wider sharing of navigational data than is generally known
