I've been interested in this field for a while but it seems there are not much of a demand of it right now. At least in California.

The National Society of Professional Surveyors has been working on geospatial technology issues in Congress and the Federal government for years. It is amazing how much geospatial technology plays a role in many diverse and often unrelated issues.

I am currently a non- traditional student at Youngstown State University and enrolled in their SIS program. The more I get into the core classes the more I want to learn. The areas of everyday life that are affected by this technology are many. For anyone who likes maps or geography, I strongly suggest looking into this field. I am not even half way through the program but I already feel as though this career path is absolutely the right choice for me.

This is a fascinating article, truly. It's exciting to see how geospatial tools are quickly reaching their full potential in the real world.

The use of geospatial technology is becoming so portable (smartphones, or not so smart phones), accessible, and usable that many people do not even realize the true analytical power of this science.

I've been involved with GIS for over 20 years and am generally recognized for bringing attention GIS in hospitals and healthcare characterized by the term "Health Geographics". The field has grown to encompass clinical/medical, health research, health services, health status assessment, location-based planning & operations for health resources and assets, and healthcare preparedness. There is the International Journal of Health Geographics that publishes scholarly papers on various Health Geographics concepts and research. A number of academic institutions offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in health geographics, health informatics and similar. Indiana University has the Center for Health Geographics. So I would say that GIS in the hospital/healthcare area is definitely gaining mainstream status.
