Think about it... people with mental disorders usually use smoking as a way of coping. People with mental disorders are also involved, many times, with similar individuals. They're called co-dependent relationships. Is it the tobacco smoke causing their significant others to be unstable... or were they attracted to the relationship for that very reason....

not that im suggesting all smokers are unstable... just that many unstable people gravitate towards the habit and that is definitely going to skew the statistics.

The demonizing of tobacco by "activists", government, and the media couldn't possibly have an effect on the stress levels of the population exposed to tobacco smoke now could it? Similarly, the persecution of people who use marijuana couldn't possibly be a contributor to their stress now could it?

If you'll notice, all of these "studies" are conducted by smoke-hating NicoNazis who always use CYA terms such as "may cause,""have been known to cause," "studies show," ad ignoramus! The simple facts are: (1) the flames of the nicotine wars were were huffed into being and furiously fueled by the liberal psuedo-journalists of the leftwing media as a means of destroying the tobacco industry, who just happened to be the second-largest supporters of conservative and Republilcan politicians. Those news"makers" had a strong, unwitting ally in the Christian right since they have always been opposed to underage smoking and by extension all smoking; and (2) for every person for whom you can build a reasonable case that he/she is a victim of secondhand smoke, I will give you the cemetery location of 10 victims (for sure!) of secondhand alcohol!! Of course, the alcohol industry and its chief operators, the Kennedy clan, primarily support Democrat candidates.

My challenge: Show me results obtained by the time honored scientific method--which must include control groups who are subjected to the same levels of, say, body odor or cheap (even some expensive) perfumes in the same concentration as the members of the test group are exposed to secondhand smoke, and don't forget that the scientific method requires replication of results when the groups are switched. Oh, as a further means of seeking the truth, the control group should be subjected to sitcoms, commercials, innuendoes 24/7 via electronic media that will inculcate them with a deepseated repulsion to such body orders and/or perfume aromas. Such indoctrination should instill them with the assurance that purveyors of such scents are members of an ignorant, dirty, insensitive subculture. Bring me written, documented proof that secondhand smoke harms any otherwise healthy person, and I will peruse the papers and then eat them in your presence! Or smoke them, whichever you prefer.

One last note, I despise the smell of cigarette smoke, and attempt to convince any smoker under the age of 55 to quit the habit now. There does exist documented proof (obtained through the abovedelineated criteria) that nicotine improves memory function. Briefly, two groups of 6 teenage students took intelligence tests; one group was allowed to smoke and averaged 4% higher scores. Six weeks later, same testing situation except the smoking/non-smoking groups were switched. Surprise! Within statistical limits, the new smoking group scored 4% higher than the new non-smoking group. Is it then a coincidence that all the Alzheimer's victims that I personally know stopped smoking after age 55? Anecdotal, I admit, but has anyone researched to ascertain if this "smoke" does indeed signal a "fire"? Probably not, as it would be a long reach to attach any political agenda to the cause.

I read somewhere that partial abstinence from smoking often produces more severe withdrawal effects than total abstinence. That's probably explains the findings of the quoted study;passive smokers may be in a state of perpetual withdrawal due to the constant presence of nicotine

downregulating dopamine subreceptors.

any smart ass out there can preach about cigarette smoking and health concerns, and that's the biggest benefit anybody will ever get from their insurance companies, lobbying the regulations and fund rising the movie and TV industries and countless organizations around the world for their own benefits and fears, that their policy will not cover all of their policy holders, by doing so, also created additional " Cancer" related policies, how brilliant, in the meanwhile, watching them crash the stock market over and over again with our money, see them investment in housing market and burst again, when everything failed, they fuel wars to secure nature resources and sells craps like " emission" stocks, thank you, insurance industries, you are truly a creation of mankind's greed ultimately, the whole tobacco industry used to be colonial governments' best friend, now in the capitalism era, you rule! And what mental alternating medication do you suggest me to take now? Perhaps in the next medical research funded by one of you guys I might see the answer, yet again.

If you want to smoke and poison yourselves (proven fact) that is your choice. If you don't care how much pain you create for your loved ones that have to see your physical well being go in the dumper just show the courtesy of not disposing of your cigarettes on the sidewalk and on the road. This goes for non smokers that throw trash on the sidewalks and streets. Years ago I smoked two packs per day but I saw my father suffocate to death due to good old Lucky Strikes causing Emphasema. It was my choise to quit. I have been so much happier and healthier since that day 20 years ago. I feel it the individuals own choice to quit or not. But use courtesy when you smoke. I do not want to smell or breath that nasty smell indoors or out. Please keep down wind of others. I don't think that left or right thinking has anything to do with this. It is coutesy towards others that should stop you from throwing you cigs on the ground. Step back and look at the big picture not thru your little smoke filled world!!

"particularly when smokers dispose of still-lit cigarettes into streets and sidewalks where they constitute a fire hazard"

A lit cigarette on a concrete sidewalk or blacktop street is a fire hazard?

What planet do you live on?

Shows just how far the left will go to promote their agenda.
