maybe we are too late ..maybe there is already other life forms there .If we arrive at that new ''planet'' ,the people there maybe respond with an act of war.

I think its amazing that a new planet just like Earth ,but it could it just be Earth the teloscope was pointing at.I would be sure that is wasn't just Earth. Its still the best thing that ever happened in life for us.

Really Klett? Bring politics into a space discussion? I understand if it is about NASA or other space programs budgets issues...but come on.

Don't left fear keep us from exploring and learning. The planets we are seeing now are from brand-new technology. Until very recently we have only known of the few in our solar system. If we do find planets capable of life, we may never (at least in our lifetime) make contact so don't be so scared. Yes, our findings one day could bring contamination of some sort here or there but we may also find positive knowledge to help all. If we were afraid to explore, we would not have all the useful info needed to enrich our lives. Try to be positive, wary and never stop learning. God bless.

...but not an alien to find. The thing is, just because a massive rock like object about the size of earth is found revolving around a star doesn't mean it is going to support intelligent life like ours. There are several factors that a planet needs in order for life to be possible. Unfortunately, most if not all planets we have found fail in meeting all of those criteria.
Then we have the problem of contamination. Are there organisms on these planets harmful to us or other life forms on earth? What about the other way around? Are the species of bacteria on these far away planets identical to some on earth? If so, how do we know if this bacteria is Martian or the evidence of astronauts' poor hygiene?

"If we," or I should say, "When we find a planet like Earth, just what will we do?"
Make contact and try to change them to our ways or will they be stronger and change us to their way?
Maybe they have democrats and repbulicans, just by another name.
Will they be better or worse, could not be in much worse shape than our Obama Earth.
Fix the earth first, never mind trying to find someone out their that may not want to be found!!! I don't care how advanced they may be, we need to re-invent ways to save this planet. If our planet fades, who gets to go to the new planet, that is, if they even want us. The president and his cabinet? Surly not the elderly, or maybe that is the idea in the first place.

Its a very valuable and thoughtful article in recent web search for me. An early scientist also predict there are some planets can habitat the population.
The problem is how, when and where, no one knows, just experiments and searching in the endless space and galaxies. Some try to find where those Heaven explain by the Asian Buddhist Philosophical theory. Do any NASA or any other Space organization find at single one. No? Not at all? They couldn't.So far they wasted time and trillions of funds? Before they take further steps to find new other planet for living, it is better for them to make this planet suitable for living.Have we found medicine for the Cancer or HIV or atleast can single hair dye found for the permenent color what we desire. NO?
There are million of suns and and millions of planets out there. As a Buddhist we know there are very intelligent creatures living in other planets. Our technology is not sophisticated enough to find it exactly where!
Only with a super human brain could find that kind of planet. My personal idea is to divert those funds to under developed countries, to make their lives better. Then only will the world could be healed!

At the current rate, if no funding is awarded, at least one of this folks will claim an alien has landed in his back yard.
