My company's software platform visualizes and analyzes social networks. We mostly work with lawyers and lobbyists, but I'd love to map out things like this. Just need to find the right project..

They followed people in a small town. Would the results be different in a bigger town or city since there are more chances of connecting? Who funded this study and what did it cost? Sounds like a particular medical group is drumming up business. What's next making that a work comp and social security claim like fatness is?

Ive long obseved this tendency. I can think of several instances where I have experienced both the effect and the affect of loneliness.

The world is indeed a belicose place with innumerable cause for lonelines. But recognizing this in stoic affirmation is essential to first accepting our own lack of faith in humanity and then to move beyond it. We can then overcome the deleterious feelings of loneliness with an existential faith that is our creation entire, our tapestry of life.

"After years of chasing the American dream, lurking on the edge of political correctness/individualism, my cup had runneth over - to the point of spillage. Now left with the uncertainty of an obtainable future, I find myself caught in purgatory - frozen in time - all beliefs in question - unable to move, if even to wipe up said spillage. It has become a matter of stagnant survival, maintaining a certain level of extistance, if only to prevent extinction. What of dreams and hope? I sleep from pure exhaustion if only to hope for a foretelling dream, yet I wake from the sheer uncomfortableness of it all."

Quote from the loyal working class, who reluctantly bought into (caveat emptor) what society had to sell, only to find itself thrust to the edges of a kinesis that continues to grow - much like bacterium.

So - my "friends" - when you are blinded by the light - step back, put on some shades, and shield yourself from further infection!!

These are quite some strange viewpoints.

But, since I fall into the category of believe people are NOT animals, and that people are spiritual and sentient beings, I must say that there is a difference between being "lonely" and spending a lot of time alone.

Its a matter of personal preference.

However, I do not buy, for one second, that the people we hang out with "make" ourselves who we are. After all, it is a personal choice to take on the traits, mannerisms, and etc. of other people in the long run.

I love spending time with all of my friends - but I love the time I spend by myself. It is comfortable.

I prefer shopping, reading, drinking coffee, by myself.

I prefer talking, laughing, and other activities with other people. Just be smart enough to choose yourself and what YOU want.

We are all connected.

In response to "mr contagious of PA @ Dec 01, 2009 13:22:29 PM" Wake up!

We need to transition to a higher vibration and different way of being with our fears and lack. As a famous president said, think what you can do for our country, not what our country can do for you. Spreading this idea of fear, that everyone is out to get you is just showing your own lack and voids. We are connected, and you putting this fear out there is just perpetuating the problem. The problem being people living with this idea that they are not part of the whole, the universe is out to get them, and there are not people holding a higher conciousness for humanity. The universe provides us with everything we need, when we need it. It is true that we are responsible for our own path, but that doesn't mean that the others are not on the same path themselves. Raise your self out of fear and lack and see your place which is sharing love and the path of light, and stop projecting your voids and shadow onto others. The sustainable relationships with the world can only be achieved by filling the your voids with love, and this is achieved by acting at a different and higher level of vibration and light.

"It's interesting that the researchers say lonely people tend to mistrust others. Your response makes it clear that you mistrust the studies themselves, as well as the researchers engaged in the studies. What does this suggest?"

What does it suggest? Re-read my post. Make it in UPPER CASE if necessary this time.

Self-reliance is definitely powerful but there's everything right about being connected and staying connected. I honestly feel sorry for "mr contagious of PA" if he's so jaded to life that he can't even follow his human nature to be a social animal. Family, friends, community, religion/core beliefs...there's happiness to find when you try.

it sounds crazy, but it could be true. I mean, there is something to be said about similar people attracting each other, but at the same time, we know that complainers can effect the morale of an office or group setting, we know the effects of "mob mentality", some of our finest philosophers believe that we are shaped by our environment, so i think its worth giving this idea a little attention... Especially if it could help someone become happier.
