THIS is one of the methods used to teach me how to speak correctly since I'm hearing impaired. I learned to speak and read via phonics and many years of speach therapy. I make my kids look at me so I 'can see what they're saying' not that I can read lips but I can read faces due to that training. The goal was for me to blend into society and the goal was successfully reached :)
Eyes, too! All us old folks lip-read a bit. When I was a teen-ager, my father used to accuse me [jokingly, I thought] of "mumbling." Now, with teen-age grandchildren, I know how he felt. He wasn't kidding.

I do this when I teach Adult ESOL. I have my students "feel" the air coming from my lips, and I show them air movement with a tissue in front of my mouth as I speak.
I think it's crucial for them to feel and hear to help them reproduce sounds that are foreign to them.
