New Hydrogen-Storage Method Discovered

A new safe hydrogen storage vehicle has incredible potential for new systems of energy. I found a great video that explains how a hydrogen solid is used to store and release energy. If you would like to learn more about this process I'll post a link to the video.

i kind of like this because it makes you think what u can do to find out a new thing

Many readers may have looked at the stated pressures and concluded the applications are extremely limited. Please consider:

The primary device we model that includes this level of pressure is the mechanical feed to a continuous hydrogen fusion furnace. This scenario would reside within the last stage of hydrogen compression before injection into the fusion chamber. The fusion engine will provide these pressures as a by-product; the fusion chamber would be tapped because the chamber’s internal pressures are much higher.

Interferometry permits us to substitute another element for xenon in this application. A different atom – say, argon, would be added to the tritium fuel. Interferometry would be tuned to cause the argon atoms to be ‘shaken’ until their physical size matches that of xenon atoms at this pressure. The Interferometry will also permit more ready alignment of the substitute atoms (or xenon) in the lattice described in the article above. The smaller argon atom may actually work better since its actual size is adjustable with interferometry changes.

The current model for fusion engines now includes interferometry (see The National Ignition Facility), so to modulate a lower harmonic to integrate the hydrogen fuel is already included in the design. To the scientists involved in creating fusion engines, this research has provided a clear model of the way to solve a huge headache within their fuel delivery system.

Good job, Somayazulu and company!

Many years ago was shown a hydrogen storage system that contaiined a metal hydride. it was developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY. When heated the hydrogen was released. Waste heat from a motor could supply sufficient energy to release the H gas.

Like all nobility in human history from kings and queens to popes and bishops when the pressure comes they react. Now we find noble elements the same. I like the allegorical nature of the article.

Scientifically, however, although there may not be a quick practical benefit to this discovery is surely contributes to the knowledge base of new understanding of physics and chemistry. Somehow, sometime, this knowledge will bear fruit that directly benefits the lives of humans and the life of the planet. Carnegie Institution deserves applause.

What about the almost limitless energy source 4 miles under our feet? Hot molten magma under the earth's crust. It's never going cold and its all right there powered by our Earth's nuclear reactive center. The cost/energy output is higher but once the hole is dug it stays. It's the only consistant energy source that is completely pollution free and that can be harvested in any weather or time of day. It would run off exactly the same thing today's nuclear reactors use to turn electricity turbines - steam. Once one hole is dug then multiple tap lines can be drilled in lateral branching directions from that hole at depth multiplying the yield.

Right now there is next to nothing in research & development on how to do this. But there are companies right now drilling holes that deep, why not fund them or make this a priority?

But is the material stable in lower pressures after formation? If not, then maybe one day when we're working on the Jovian moons, ...

I have been working with hydrogen for 40 years. I make it by chemical reaction for pennies per 100cu.ft. I have used it to power stoves, motors, water heating, space heating etc.

Hydrogen is a perfect fuel if it can be produced with efficiency. No pollution is caused by combustion. Pollution is caused in the production process.

I have reduced pollution but I cannot eliminate production pollution completely. I have not found another power producing fuel that has no pollution. Nothing is perfect to fuel automobiles. Solar cell production uses power and causes pollution.

You must accept some bad with the good or return to the stone age.

It's just a really poor energy storage medium! No where on earth does hydrogen bubble up out of the ground. If you think you're gonna make it with solar voltaics think again.

Internal combustion of hydrogen doesn't get rid of a big heavy oil burning engine with tons of moving parts and a crappy torque curve, or large expensive fuel cells that use precious metals in their construction. Electrical energy needs to be stored directly in a battery, capacitor, fluid, flywheel, etc or the like and power a light weight electric motor that has close to zero maintenance with flat torque curve starting at zero RPMs.

The hydrogen economy makes no more sense than a Futon economy.

Grow trees, cut them down, make lumber, build Futons, burn futons in a powerplant, charge the batteries of your electric car. In other words just burn the trees in the power plant, no use building furniture out of them first!

arg!
