Hank,

Your delightful optimism is rapidly leading the charge towards a dysfunctional America, as you and others continue to deny reality.

Question. How many carbon emitting automobiles were on the road 13,000 years ago?

hank_v of MT 11:44AM November 18, 2009

At the certain level of the generality, the carbon has a big infulence on globle warming. True as the artical cites, carbon isotopes in the certain areas has proved a lot about climate and the minerals, such as uranium.

But research will go harder.

In cases like this, it is best to go back to the original data. The National Snow and Ice Data Center data is available at the KNMI Climate Explorer, http://climexp.knmi.nl

I assume they are talking about minimum summer ice, as winter ice has stayed about constant. Ice minimum is in September. When I analyze September ice, I do not find a 3% decline per year. I find a 1.2% decline. I invite you to do the analysis yourselves. Unfortunately, this kind of exaggeration is quite common in the climate world.

In addition, the 1970s were quite cold in the arctic. As a result, the short period of data that we have is in a warming trend. Whether that trend will continue is an open question.

Chances are you're already picnicking under a palm tree. I'm happy for you that you're able to look at a picture of Arctic ice and deduce that "most" of it is still there, however you might want to look again (http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/). It's long term trends that are important....not cherry-picked snapshots.

instead of "all" - You are quite right Mr. FUBAR. However, my conclusion remains correct -"most" is still there notwithstanding a 60% loss!

R.L. Schaefer of CA 1:46PM November 13, 2009

Do the math 0.97*0.97*.097*0.97 etc ends in a 60% reduction of the ice ... your math is FUBAR. (0.97^30)

indicates that if there has been a 3% annual decrease in Arctic sea ice over the past 30 years, as the article states, then it must be all gone. I just checked out a satellite pic - most still appears to be there.

I note that last year more "new" Arctic ice formed than in any year for the past decade.

Might be a good thing - if you like ice.

Personally, I'm rooting for global warming. Wouldn't you rather picnic under a palm tree than a glacier?
