The entire wold is using diesel. Switch to diesel and you will already achieve 50mpg. There is no need to go too fancy about hybrid. Go diesel....

This is a specious example of true Government Motors and the DOE not innovating in the best interests of families having to pay rental expenses just to get to and from work. Every vehicle built has already consumed 60% of it's life cycle when it hits the showroom. This is a hick prank developed by public relations. It does nothing to elevate the standard of living for the rest of the world.

To the students working on this project. Congratulations to whoever wins this contest. Unfortunately you are pawns in the game.

We tested a diesel/electric TRUE hybrid, 3 metric tons(6600 lbs) standard driving cycle. We experienced 91 MPG. A hybrid is supposed to be full electric and an angine that only responds to low battery voltage as a gen-set charger at rated load(max efficiency). Battery tech is the only holdback for now. Hybrids have been around a century, as locomotives, submarines and ships where any saving is a big one. Even a CVT transmission will do wonders, old tech on bulldozers and lawn tractors.
