Contrary to the article's statement that bats and birds have "the smallest genomes of backboned species," that attribute belongs to certain pufferfishes, as cited at http://www.genomesize.com/statistics.php?stats=fish. At 0.35 picogram, their genomes are about one-third the weight of an average hummingird genome.
